Background of the Study
Politeness strategies form a vital component of interpersonal communication, particularly in cultures where respect and deference are highly valued. In Abeokuta, the Yoruba language is steeped in traditional norms that emphasize courteous expressions and honorifics, especially among community elders. Politeness in Yoruba is not merely about etiquette; it encapsulates a complex system of semantic nuances that reflect social hierarchies, cultural values, and interpersonal relationships (Olatunji, 2024). Community elders, as custodians of cultural heritage, employ specific linguistic markers that signal respect, humility, and solidarity. These markers are deeply embedded in the language’s syntax and lexicon, often manifesting through proverbs, honorific titles, and indirect speech. Contemporary influences and modernization, however, have begun to alter these traditional semantics, leading to a gradual shift in politeness strategies (Adekunle, 2023). This study examines the current state of Yoruba politeness strategies among elders, analyzing how these semantic elements are maintained, adapted, or transformed in response to changing social dynamics. The investigation highlights the importance of preserving these cultural practices while acknowledging the inevitable evolution brought about by external influences.
Statement of the Problem
The evolution of politeness strategies in the Yoruba language among community elders in Abeokuta presents significant challenges to the preservation of traditional semantic values. As modern communication methods and external cultural influences permeate daily interactions, the established norms of respectful address and deference are at risk of dilution (Olatunji, 2024). This shift has led to inconsistencies in how respect is semantically encoded, resulting in potential misunderstandings and a gradual erosion of cultural heritage. The tension between maintaining time-honored linguistic practices and adapting to modern contexts raises concerns about the sustainability of these politeness conventions.
